Good product, and a sensible size, battery life is excellent. Some smart watches look like half a brick on your wrist.and the battery life is useless, the only gripe I have is that the blue tooth range is not that good & it is difficult to pair, sometimes takes 5 or six attempts, otherwise no complaints.
Having upgraded from the standard Pebble some weeks ago, I felt it may be useful to "compare & contrast" the two here?
On the plus side, the Steel looks like a proper watch, especially if you select the ModdernCal+ watch face (this is a must have by the way) and opt for the steel wrist band.
In terms of functionality, the two are identical and in terms of operation, I would say the button spacing on the standard watch is slightly easier to operate (feel for at night). This is because the buttons on the Steel are so close together, which whilst looking better than the standard button layout, is less ergonomic because you can't easily "feel" where one button ends and another starts. Beyond a very small bevel which separates the buttons on the Steel by >1mm there is nothing to tell you have moved from one button to the next. That said, it's not a huge problem and certainly the improved "look" of the button layout adds greatly to the less "geeky" look of the Pebble Steel itself but it is worth a mention if you have large fingers.
The leather strap (standard with the Pebble Steel) looks fine but you'll soon have to replace it if you wear the watch all the time; as I do, including in the Gym. Any vigorous exercise resulting in the generation of even moderate perspiration will soon render the leather strap sufficiently unpleasant to your olfactory senses that you will be forced to replace it. This is when you will discover that your choice in alternative straps is sorely limited and whilst the fixing is a standard 22mm because of the three tine design of the watch bezel itself, there are few options available beyond the ones offered by Pebble.
Having said that, the standard mat black Pebble Steel replacement watch strap (which is the only one I can discuss here as it's the only one I have tried) is superb. Very sturdy, easy to fit & remove and likely to give many years of service. One point to note is that the strap is HUGE...I am a very standard build (5' 10") but had to return to the watchsmith twice to have links removed before this would fit without slipping round on my wrist of its own accord, to present its clasp to me rather than the watchface. I believe I had 6 links removed (3 on each side of the clasp) before this issues was resolved.
Finally on the downside (Steel v Standard) and again concerning the watchstrap, something which may be relevant to a number of Pebble "owners" particularly given the vast number of sports related "apps" which suggest it's a great purchase for anyone with an active lifestyle, I should point out that in terms of functionality the standard Pebble rubber watchstrap cannot be beaten. This is because the standard strap can be expanded to such an extent that it can be worn OVER whatever you have on your sleeve (base-layer, cycle jersey, fleece etc.) and so can be adjusted to still be visible and accessible even during activity. Sadly the standard Pebble rubber wriststrap will not fit the Pebble Steel and neither the leathr or standard Pebble Steel's wriststraps can be expanded to the same extent...BUT what the Steel does accomplish, with aplomb, is a far greater sense of style.
So, in short, if you want style and great functionality...then the Steel is for you. If, on the other hand, you require a watch for the active pursuer of health & fitness who cares not a jot what they look like then the standard Pebble is the rightt choice. Sadly (and in my opinion an oversight on the part of Pebble) you cannot have both! Because of the way the Pebble App works on the phone, it can only connect with one watch at a time and there is no way to transfer settings (alarm, backlight, menu order etc.) between watches so these need to be remade every time you swap.
In closing, I must add that either Pebble is a great purchase and having had all manner of watches in the past, from Cartier to Timex, I would not...nay could not, be without my Pebble Smart Watch.
